CHICKNEY CHURCH

.

Saturday was here already. How fast the time goes when you are having so much fun. Sue and I both rushed for the wash-bowl. She won, so I made the breakfast while waiting, trying to include everything I could in the omelet so as not to have to carry the food on to Colchester today. I had some packing to do, but Sue had most of hers still in the suitcase. However, we did have to switch things around a little which took extra time.

After breakfast we saw Cathy and she invited us in for coffee. Phillip was there also, and showed us some wonderful old photos, maps, etc.. It was such a thrill to actually go into and sit in the kitchen of the Moor End Farm. What memories lurk within this lovely old home. There were oil paintings of ancestors, and beautiful old furniture, and much, much more including Roman tiles from excavations etc. How wonderful for the children to be brought up here. What a shame if all of this is lost with the Stansted expansion program. Devastating!

Cathy offered to take us to the airport, but I told her that Sonia was on her way from Suffolk to do just that. We thanked her for such a nice stay and told her how much we liked Moor End Farm. It wasn't long until Sonia drove up. It had taken her 45 minutes to drive in rush-hour traffic from Suffolk. She helped put our baggage into her car, and away we went, sadly looking out of the rear window for a last look at our dear Moor End Farm.

Sonia drove by The Bell and we said goodbye to Sonia's parents.

#1 Last look.

#2 Laura (Mom) by the gate in 1969.

#3 Evelyn (me) by same gate 2003.

#4 Laura on other side of Bell. This is where her dad put her out of the window as she was raising a fuss in the pub in about 1900. She was about 2 years old.. :)

We had a little time to spare so Lisa then took us to Cold Arbour Farm as I wanted to take a photo of it, having just recently received a very old photo with my grandfather as mail carrier standing by the gate at Cold Arbour Farm.. As we drove into the driveway, a mail-delivery truck drove in behind us!! Another coincidence? I should have spoken to the mail-carrier and showed him the photo of my grandfather delivering mail there over 100 years ago. But I didn't.
I also recently received a photo of Charles Turner of Broxted. Charles Turner was a decorated UK ARMY man later in life. But here, he was just a school-boy, walking around the bend in the road from Broadwater Cottage. Sonia found the bend in the road I believe.

Sonia took us by the old Vicarage and it brought back memories of our visit in 1969.

#24 Chickney Church. Date unknown.

Chickney Church, where my grandfather William Poole was once Parish Clerk.

Now, to my favorite "Three Horseshoes" pub for some lunch...and then to Stansted and a fond farewell to Sonia.
"There is still only a handful of houses along this road, which is about 2 miles long, including Elsenham Hall which was built by the Gilby family who owned most of Stansted Mountfitchet and Elsenham. There is still a 1700th century public house known as the 3 Horse Shoes, an old thatched property that stands on the corner of Mole Hill Green and the road that leads to Broxted (abt 1/4 mile along)." Taken from Clive Rixon's website. www.broxted.org/

Sadly, we had to rush through lunch as it was near time for the coach to take us to Colchester. Sonia took us right to the spot where we boarded the coach, and we waved goodbye through the windows as both vehicles started down the road. We will always remember how nice it was of Sonia to take us to so many places, just so we could take a photo. She is a very sweet lady who once lived in the BELL, like our Poole family did.. Next stop.... Colchester!
